3 gold medals for Team IPPONGEAR in Zagreb

This weekend, the new Olympic cycle was kicked off in Croatia, at the traditional Zagreb Grand Prix. A very successful weekend for team IPPONGEAR, where no less than 11 athletes managed to win a medal, of which 3 of them were gold.

Sanne Van Dijke: Gold in the weight category -78 kg

Sanne Van Dijke of the Netherlands could celebrate coming away with a gold medal in the weight category -78 kg. The Dutch powerhouse has been a force in the -70 kg category for years but has now already in her first outing in the -78 kg category proved that she could be a strong contender in the higher weight category as well.

Karla Prodan: Silver in the weight category -78 kg

Runner-up in the category -78 kg, were home favourite, Croatia’s Karla Prodan, who could celebrate the fifth Grand Prix medal of her career. The 2021 Tokyo Olympian has been struggling with several injuries and was unfortunately not able to book a spot at the 2024 Olympic Games but showed this weekend, that she is ready for the next Olympic cycle.

Peter Safrany: Gold in the weight category -90 kg

Hungary’s Peter Safrany could be thrilled about delivering the best result of his career yet, as he was able to capture the gold medal in the weight category -90 kg. It was the first ever medal in a Grand Prix for the Hungarian and what a way to capture a first Grand Prix medal. 

Daniel Szegedi: Gold in the weight category -73 kg

Another Hungarian who could add a first ever Grand Prix medal to his resume, was 21 years old Daniel Szegedi, who managed to book the top spot at the weight category -73 kg. Szegedi, WRL #82, came into the competition unseeded but in the end of the day, was able to come away with the gold medal and raise the flag for Hungary.

Robert Klacar: Bronze in the weight category -73 kg

Szegedi could share the podium with another IPPONGEAR athlete, Robert Klacar of Croatia, who could be happy about securing his first ever medal in a Grand Prix and doing so, on home ground.

Ana Viktorija Puljiz: Silver in the weight category -57 kg

Ana Viktorija Puljiz of Croatia made her first appearance in her new weight category in style, as she managed to make it all the way to the final in the weight category -57 kg and in the end of the day, was awarded a silver medal. The former European bronze medalist narrowly missed out on a spot at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games but showed this weekend, that she will be a strong contender in the -57 kg category as well.

Amber Gersjes: Bronze in the weight category -48 kg

Dutch lightweight Amber Gersjes could be delighted to win her first World Tour medal of the new Olympic cycle, as she was awarded a bronze medal in the weight category -48 kg.

Tereze Bodnarova: Bronze in the weight category -52 kg

In the category -52 kg, Czech Tereze Bodnarova could celebrate winning her first ever medal on the IJF World Tour, a bronze medal. It was Bodnarova’s first competition this year, as well as her first competition in her new weight division, the category -52 kg. What a day for this young Czech athlete.

Iva Oberan: Bronze in the weight category -63 kg

Iva Oberan could be thrilled to secure the fourth Grand Prix medal of her career and the first medal at her home ground event in Zagreb. Oberan was one of the, in total, five Croatian athletes, who was able to capture a medal in Zagreb and give the home crowd something to cheer for.

Lara Cvjetko: Bronze in the weight category -70 kg

Another home ground medalist at this year’s Zagreb Grand Prix was Lara Cvjetko, who captured a bronze medal in the weight category -70 kg. Cvjetko was qualified for the Olympic Games 2024, however, she was not selected, as Barbara Matic, who became Olympic Champion in Paris, was the chosen Croatian representative. This weekend, Cvjetko showed that she is ready to continue to battle for the spot at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028.

Movli Borchashvili: Bronze in the weight category +100 kg

Austrian heavyweight, Movli Borchashvili could celebrate a career high, as he was able to come away with a bronze medal in the men’s heavyweight category and be awarded his first medal at the IJF World Tour.
